1952 General Electric 'Speed Cooking' 40" range

***Edited to add that I believe that I have dated the range with the help of the GE website***

Bill and I were shopping in Houghton Lake. I always stop in the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store to hunt for antique light fixtures. For cabin lighting, the uglier, the better!

Well, on our way in... I spotted this beautiful 1950's General Electric range. We asked the man that runs the store if it worked. He said that he briefly tested it and all 4 burners and both ovens work! He is not sure if they work well, but they do work. This will be a great addition to our cabin, once we have it cleaned up in the spring. Bill does need to replace the old 220 plug with a newer one and he will check the rest of the wiring. It will have to sit in our garage downstate, until I can give it a good cleaning in the spring.

We don't know the exact year, I've googled it, but can't find any info on this model. If you know anyone who may be able to identify the year, let us know.

GE model #J466A1WH
Serial #HAK68228

Here are some of the feature's:
'Push-button' burners, one large burner, 3 regular burners
2 ovens, one is 1/3, the other is 2/3
both original broiler pans!
1 oven window
oven lights
flourescent cook-top light
clock
2 oven timers
individual oven controls

Here are some pics in our garage

That looks like a great find. A good friend of my from Los Angeles is very active in Habitat for Humanity. Not only can you get good deals at the Re-Store but the profits go to a wonderful cause. Wish we had one in Powell River. - Margy

What a wonderful blast from the past! My mother had one very similar to that one and it was in our kitchen while I was growing up. Wonderful suppers on snowy nights back in the 1950s/1960s!

My husband and I own a cabin in West Branch and I fear that we have this "dry well" business for our kitchen sink as well. As you suspect, it is not working, so I was searching the web after a tip from a conversation with a plumber where I happened upon your blog. How did you guys learn about this? Where to find it on your property? Find out if it has a trap to clean, although I doubt it because nothing at our place has been done using an ioda of common sense. I see your husband said it is hard work, yikes! My folks are currently living at our place due to economic hardship and I wanted to get the sink fixed for my mom. Any suggestions for learning about this, or anything at all would be helpful. Thank you for this blog though, I thought only my place would have such an unheard of pain in the butt.

I live in Milwaukee, WI and was looking on the Internet to identify my 40" GE Electric range that now needs a home due to a kitchen remodeling project. It turns out that I have the identical range. I have used it since I bought this house in 2002 and will miss it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could go about finding a home for it?

My range cooker from rangemaster worth every penny. I wanted so much a black gas range cooker and now I have it. I can finally say that I am a happy cook.

A neighbor just gave us the exact same range, with one exception, the large oven door does not have a window. I think that we will have to replace the insulation, as you cannot touch the top when the oven is on.
