Cabin Corner Detail

We know that painting logs is a no-no. This was the style, 'back then'. Our paint color is 'Barn Red' and is still produced today. Behr makes barn paint in red and white.

We had wanted to completely strip the logs and stain them, but our log replacement contractor said that he would never be able to get all of the red out. He said maybe 90%, which didn't seem good to us either.

I really wish that I had a close-up of this. These corners had been cut off (gulp) with a chain saw! Probably due to rot. The smaller section of the cabin is our utility room. The window toward the left is the window over my kitchen sink.

Corner detail at the side door of the utility room after log replacement. They used car jacks to hold up the cabin while they cut out the bottom logs. I really wished that I could have been there to see it, but I had to work. When I arrived around 1am, I walked around the cabin...in awe...with a flashlight....shouting with glee! LOL The log guy left us a couple of the original iron pins that held the logs on top of each other. He replaced those with bolts.
Ta Da! Complete corners again! Ain't they purdy? These photo's were taken in April of '06, so there is no greenery to accent the beautiful work. We not only had to replace corners, but a couple of long logs had to be replaced.

You're right, paint is a no no. But on your 'vintage cabin' it sure gives it character.

I agree w/ Jen - your cabin has so much character and I love the ends - it adds a neat architectural detail!

And I agree with both Shell and Jen! It's a Vintage Log Cabin! The Barn Red paint just seems to fit!

Thank you Jen, Shelley, Rick and Dianne. We struggled with the decision of painting and corn cob blasting, but the negatives outweighed the benefits.

Hi Denise - You get your logs around the sides and mine are on the bottom. They did a beautiful job with the replacements. That couldn't have been easy, but it is amazing what can be done with jacks and winches. Being a city girl it all seems like magic. - Margy

Thanks Margy, the only thing that would make my cabin better, would be floating next to your cabin! We could be neighbor's on the water.

Helga, thank you for stopping in. I'm sure that you were looking for Log Cabin quilts/patterns. I appreciate you stopping by to comment. :)

Denise... so glad you are enjoying our blog. I hope that you and your husband make it to New England some autumn... it is truly a spectacular sight to see. You seem to have glorious falls in Michigan, too! It is definitely a place on our "to see" list.

Your blog is lovely! I am glad you left a post on ours so I could in turn discover yours. We are so interested in timber frames and log cabins, so your blog (as well as your listing of other blogs) is a total treat for us. I have to admit I am also looking forward to trying your pizza chili recipe - it sounds delicious!

Keep up the good work :)
